Glaucoma Care
Specialist Glaucoma Treatment in Bermuda
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible sight loss worldwide, but with early detection and the right treatment, your vision can be protected. Many people with glaucoma have no symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular eye examinations are so important.
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the vital connection between your eyes and your brain. In most cases, this damage is caused by abnormally high pressure inside the eye. When the eye’s natural drainage system does not work as effectively as it should, fluid builds up, pressure increases, and the optic nerve gradually becomes damaged.
The most common form is open-angle glaucoma, which develops slowly and often without any noticeable symptoms, sometimes called the “silent thief of sight.” Acute angle-closure glaucoma is less common but more urgent, causing sudden eye pain, headache, nausea, and blurred vision that requires immediate treatment.
Risk factors include age (particularly over 60), family history, African or Caribbean heritage, diabetes, high myopia, and previous eye injury. If any of these apply to you, regular screening is especially important.
At Eye Health Clinic Bermuda, our consultant ophthalmologists provide specialist glaucoma screening, diagnosis, and treatment in Hamilton. Your care is led by the same consultant from your first appointment onwards.
Diagnosis & Treatment
We use advanced diagnostic technology including tonometry, OCT scanning of the optic nerve, visual field testing, gonioscopy, and pachymetry to detect glaucoma at the earliest possible stage and monitor changes over time.
Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure to prevent further optic nerve damage. Options include prescription eye drops, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), a painless laser procedure carried out in clinic that improves the eye’s natural drainage system, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) using micro-stent devices to improve fluid flow, and drainage device surgery for more advanced or complex cases.
Your consultant will discuss all available options and recommend the most effective plan for your individual needs.
