Age-related Macular Degeneration
Specialist AMD Treatment in Bermuda
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of central vision loss in older adults. It affects the macula, the small but vital area at the centre of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. AMD can make everyday tasks like reading, recognising faces, and driving increasingly difficult.
There are two types. Dry AMD is the more common form, accounting for around 85 to 90% of cases. Small deposits called drusen build up beneath the retina, gradually thinning the macular cells over time. Vision loss tends to be slow and progressive. Wet AMD is less common but more serious. Abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid damage to the macular cells. Without prompt treatment, wet AMD can lead to significant central vision loss in a relatively short period.
Symptoms include blurred or distorted central vision, straight lines appearing wavy or bent, difficulty reading, colours appearing washed out, and a dark or empty area in the centre of your vision. Risk factors include age (particularly over 50), family history, smoking, obesity, UV exposure, and high blood pressure.
At Eye Health Clinic Bermuda, our consultant ophthalmologists specialise in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of AMD in Hamilton. Early detection is key to preserving your vision for as long as possible.
Monitoring & Treatment
Our consultants use advanced diagnostic technology to detect AMD early and monitor progression accurately.
For early dry AMD, your consultant may recommend regular monitoring, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle modifications including stopping smoking, eating a diet rich in leafy greens and oily fish, and protecting your eyes from UV light. Wet AMD is treated with anti-VEGF injections, specialist eye injections delivered in our clinic under local anaesthetic that block the protein driving abnormal blood vessel growth. These can stop leakage and, in many cases, stabilise or improve your vision.
If you notice sudden distortion or straight lines appearing wavy, seek urgent care as these may be signs of wet AMD.
