Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment

Specialist Diabetic Eye Care in Bermuda

If you live with diabetes, your eyes need regular specialist attention. Diabetes can cause serious damage to the blood vessels at the back of your eye, leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Without early detection and treatment, it can result in permanent vision loss.

High blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels supplying the retina. These vessels can swell, leak fluid, or become blocked entirely. In more advanced stages, the eye grows new, abnormal blood vessels that are fragile and prone to bleeding. This progressive damage can affect anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and the risk increases the longer you have had the condition.

Diabetic macular oedema (DMO) can also develop at any stage, when fluid leaks into the macula and causes swelling that blurs your central, detailed vision. DMO is the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetic retinopathy.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often causes no symptoms at all, which is why annual screening is so important. As the condition progresses, you may notice blurred or fluctuating vision, dark spots or floaters, difficulty seeing at night, and faded colours. Any sudden change to your vision should be treated as urgent.

At Eye Health Clinic Bermuda, our consultant ophthalmologists provide comprehensive diabetic eye screening, diagnosis, and treatment in Hamilton.

Screening & Treatment

We use advanced diagnostics where required to detect changes early and monitor your condition over time.

In the earliest stages, your consultant will monitor closely and work alongside your GP or diabetes specialist to optimise blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol control. When treatment is needed, options include anti-VEGF injection therapy to reduce macular swelling and slow abnormal vessel growth, and laser photocoagulation to seal leaking blood vessels and stabilise the retina. Treatment is often most effective when these approaches are combined.

Managing your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol well, and attending regular screening, are the most important steps you can take to protect your vision.
